The Dexcom G6 CGM (blog 7)

We are very excited as today we have received the new Dexcom G6 yey! It's heartbreaking that a 6 year old would be excited about a medical device but still we can't wait to try it!

Beren used to feel unsafe without me even when he was only five years old as he knew when people weren't confident or not used to looking after him. He was starting to understand the dangers etc. A five year old should not have worries like this! The only people that look after him other than me and my partner are school and occasionally his dad. He has got used to this now and is also starting to learn how to use the pump

at age 6. Although he cannot do this without close supervision as it would be life threatening to give himself too much insulin. I've heard a few stories of older children giving themselves insulin in their sleep! I think Beren feels safer wearing the Dexcom but as a parent I couldn't cope without it now!

For the past few months we've been using the G5 and it has been a game changer. It's the same as the G4 in most ways except that I have a follow app on my phone (5 people can have this) so I get the same graph and alerts on my phone even when Beren is not with me!

But I have always struggled with the insertion of the G4 and the G5. The G6 insertion is so easy and is less painful. Basically you stick it on and press the button! Plus you can take paracetamol (it interfered with the blood readings with the G4 and G5), it's slimmer and best of all NO finger pricks! Not even to calibrate!
